With May marking the start of summer driving, preparing for road trips is essential. Long-distance driving can be challenging, so having a vehicle maintenance checklist is key to ensuring a smooth journey. Battery Check Don’t get stranded with a dying battery. Ensure connections are tight and clean and have a professional battery test done for summer readiness. Since the average life of an acid battery is 5 years, replace it if it's past that date. Peace of mind is worth it! Wiper Blades and Fluid Check Inspect your wiper blades and refill the washer fluid as needed. Good visibility is essential for safe driving, especially with seasonal elements like dust, bugs, and rain. Replace any worn blades, including the rear if applicable! Top Off All Fluids Power steering, transmission, coolant, brakes, and engine oil are essential for your vehicle's reliability. Be sure to top off all fluids before your vacation! Repair Chipped/Cracked Windows Get chipped or cracked glass repaired ASAP. Small damage can quickly worsen and jeopardize your safety while driving or disrupt your plans. Brake Check Listen to your brakes; they're crucial for your safety. Test them by listening for odd sounds or vibrations when braking. If you hear grinding or screeching, get them inspected ASAP. AC Check Ensure your air conditioning is working well for your trip. If it’s not cooling properly, get it serviced before you head out! Tire Check Your tires are crucial for getting you from point A to point B. Inspect all four tires, including your spare, for bulges, gouges, nails, or cuts, and ensure the spare is properly inflated. Tires should be replaced at 3mm of wear and always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for tire pressure, found on the driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual. Under-inflated tires can generate excess heat and may become damaged on long drives. Roadside Emergency Kit Check Before heading out on the road, make sure your roadside emergency kit is stocked. Basic items like first aid supplies, batteries, a flashlight, booster cables, basic tools, gloves, emergency flares, and water are essential for any breakdown. With your vehicle checklist completed, you can enjoy your trip without worries. Preventing roadside emergencies keeps your travels smooth and enjoyable! Happy Motoring! -Chris

At Werner’s Elite Automotive in Indianola, IA, we know that your tires are one of the most crucial components of your vehicle. They are the only part of your car in direct contact with the road, which means they play a major role in your vehicle’s performance, safety, and fuel efficiency. Regular tire maintenance and timely replacement are key to ensuring that your car continues to drive smoothly and safely. But how do you know when it’s time to replace your tires? In this blog post, we’ll answer that question in-depth and provide valuable insights on how to tell if your tires need replacing. Whether you’re experiencing tire issues or just want to stay ahead of potential problems, Werner’s Elite Automotive in Indianola, IA is here to guide you through the process and help you make informed decisions about your tire maintenance. The Importance of Healthy Tires Before we dive into when to replace your tires, let’s first take a moment to understand why healthy tires are so important. Your tires play a significant role in several aspects of your vehicle’s performance: Safety: Tires are responsible for maintaining traction on the road, especially in adverse conditions like rain, snow, or ice. Worn-out tires are more prone to losing grip, which increases the likelihood of accidents. Handling: Your tires help your vehicle respond to steering and braking inputs. Worn tires can lead to poor handling, making your car less responsive when turning or stopping. Fuel Efficiency: The condition of your tires affects how efficiently your car uses fuel. Properly inflated and well-maintained tires can improve fuel economy by reducing rolling resistance. Keeping your tires in good condition is essential not just for performance but also for ensuring your own safety and the safety of others on the road. Now, let’s take a closer look at the specific signs that it’s time to replace your tires. 1. Tire Tread Wear One of the most important indicators of when to replace your tires is the tread depth. The tread of your tire provides traction, helping you maintain control of your vehicle. As the tread wears down over time, it becomes less effective, especially in wet or slippery conditions. How to Check Tread Depth: The simplest way to check your tire tread is to use the “penny test.” Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire tread is too shallow, and it’s time for a replacement. Generally, if the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch, it’s time to replace the tires. At Werner’s Elite Automotive , we offer free tire inspections to help you determine whether your tires are worn and need replacing. We recommend having your tires checked regularly, especially before long trips or during seasonal changes. 2. Uneven Tread Wear While some wear on your tires is inevitable, uneven wear is a clear sign that something is wrong with your vehicle’s alignment, suspension, or tire inflation. If you notice that one part of the tire is worn more than another, it could indicate issues such as: Misalignment: When your wheels are not properly aligned, it can cause uneven wear on the tires. Underinflation or Overinflation: If your tires are consistently underinflated or overinflated, the tread can wear unevenly. Suspension Problems: Worn-out suspension components can cause uneven pressure on the tires, leading to uneven wear. If you notice uneven tread wear, it’s important to have your vehicle inspected by a professional at Werner’s Elite Automotive . We’ll help you determine the cause of the issue and ensure that your vehicle is aligned and balanced for optimal tire performance. 3. Cracks, Bulges, or Blisters Over time, exposure to the elements can cause the rubber of your tires to crack, especially in older tires. If you notice visible cracks in the sidewalls or the tire’s surface, this could indicate that the rubber has weakened and is at risk of failing. Bulges or blisters are also major warning signs that your tires need to be replaced immediately. These are often caused by internal tire damage, which could lead to a dangerous blowout. If you see any of these issues, it’s best to replace the tire as soon as possible. A tire with visible damage, especially one with a bulge, can be unsafe to drive on and may cause an accident if it bursts unexpectedly. 4. Frequent Flats or Loss of Pressure If you find yourself regularly needing to inflate your tires or if you experience frequent flat tires, it could be a sign of a larger issue. Tires naturally lose air over time, but a rapid loss of pressure or multiple flats in a short period may indicate that your tire is damaged beyond repair or that it’s time for a replacement. At Werner’s Elite Automotive , we can perform a thorough tire inspection to identify slow leaks or punctures that might not be immediately noticeable. If your tires are constantly losing air, it could be a sign that they are nearing the end of their lifespan. 5. Vibration or Rough Ride If your car begins to feel like it’s vibrating, or if the ride becomes noticeably rougher than usual, it could indicate that your tires are out of balance or have internal damage. Worn or damaged tires may also lead to a bumpy or uncomfortable ride, particularly if they are unevenly worn or have bulges. It’s important to have your tires balanced regularly and checked for any signs of damage. Werner’s Elite Automotive offers tire balancing and alignment services to ensure a smooth, comfortable ride every time you get behind the wheel. 6. Tire Age Even if your tires don’t show obvious signs of wear, they can still be at risk if they’re too old. Rubber naturally degrades over time, and most manufacturers recommend replacing tires every six years, with a maximum lifespan of ten years, regardless of how much tread remains. At Werner’s Elite Automotive , we can inspect the age of your tires using the manufacturing date on the sidewall. If your tires are approaching the six-year mark or older, it’s wise to consider replacing them for safety reasons, even if they don’t appear to be worn out. Why Regular Tire Inspections Are Important Regular tire inspections are an essential part of vehicle maintenance. By getting your tires inspected routinely, you can catch potential issues early and avoid unexpected breakdowns or dangerous driving conditions. At Werner’s Elite Automotive in Indianola, IA, we recommend scheduling tire checks every six months or whenever you’re due for routine maintenance. This will help ensure that your tires are in great condition and that your vehicle is safe to drive.
